Description

Subject Matter:

In the 1920s and 30s, Fernand Léger's style began getting more realistic and idealistic compared to his earlier explorations in abstraction and cubism. In terms of the human figure, he was particularly influenced by the depictions of women by Picasso and Gino Severini. The smooth lines and simple and bold forms that create the portrait of this woman reflect his interest in a revival of a more classical aesthetic.

Physical Description:

This work is a pen and pencil drawing of a solid, substantial, seated woman. She is looking slightly off to the right. Her arms are folded across her chest. The woman's hair is in a bun and she wears a hat and a sleeveless dress with buttons down the front.
