Subject Matter:
Famille verte (French for “green family”) or wucai ("five colors") is a type of overglaze ware developed and florished during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). It uses primarily overglaze green, iron red, yellow, blue and aubergine purple, and sometimes black and gold on white or colored ground. Large famille verte vases often feature vertical panels of beautiful ladies, narrative scenes, and complex flower-and-bird compositions. Smaller vessels, such as cups and bowls, feature designs that are more contained and serialized—such as a set of motif corresponding to different seasons. Peony with phoenixes or roosters, as seen on this cup with lobed rim, is a common auspicious motif in the Chinese decorative language.
Physical Description:
This bowl flares out by having a smaller diameter on the bottom and larger diameter along the rim. The outside of the bowl is decorated with red, pink, and yellow peonies with green leaves. The inside of the bowl is decorated with a red rooster. The outside rim of the bowl has two red horizontal stripes, the top rim of the bowl is wavy with many bumps that resemble flower petals, the inside rim is decorated with more peonies.
