Subject Matter:
SOS Children’s Village is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that rehouses orphaned, destitute, or abused children. Paul Rand’s design for the organization depicts a carwheeling figure partially filled with a detail from Pieter Bruegel’s painting The Children’s Games (1560). Bruegel’s painting symbolizes the importance and joy of children’s play. In this context, the painting takes on a different significance because it affirms the right of the children helped by SOS to have a stable and happy childhood. The figure is not completely filled by the detail of the painting because the poster needs to convey that these children still require help. The painting humanizes the organization and relates it to a familiar image of childhood.
