Sprite of the Mirror (New Orinse)
Saitō Kiyoshi
Description
Subject Matter:
This print is another from his trip to the US. This one is from New Orleans. The sprite in the mirror must refer to the culture of voodoo in the city, a religion connected to nature, spirits, and ancestors. This is also another instance of the representation of religion in his works.
Again we see the wood grain to remind the viewer of the process of printmaking as well as adding texture.
Physical Description:
This print depicts what appears to be a dresser mirror with a reflection. In the mirror is a close-up of someone's face, only showing hair and eyes. Both the dresser and background are textured. There is a signature on the bottom left.
