Description

Subject Matter:

In this depiction of a reflecting pool and landscaped garden in the west Paris park of Saint-Cloud, Atget explores the formal relationships between the broad, dark masses of trees and their mirror reflections in the water which encompasses the lower half of the print. The rim of the reflecting pool divides the image in a horizontal arc, while a path dotted with sculptures breaks the inky darkness of the trees and their reflections. Saint-Cloud Park was a frequent subject for Atget throughout his career, in addition to the surrounding forest, which he photographed beginning in 1906.
