Subject Matter:
This photograph was created from within the darkness of a columned entranceway looking out onto Piazza San Marco in Venice. The silhouetted shape of the archway and supporting columns vignette the composition, neatly framing the Basilica di San Marco and its bell tower, the Campanile di San Marco. The cathedral’s façade is made up of five, tall arched doorways, and is topped with a series of five large lead-covered domes. The bell tower to the cathedral’s right soars above the piazza. Running up the left side of the tower is a vertical line of small windows. The open space of the piazza is empty save for a solitary lamppost, which stands directly in line with the main door of the church.
