Description

Subject Matter:

Part of Walker Evans's project to document the architecture of the South, this photograph depicts the storefront of a laundry and barber shop. An air of mystery hangs over the flatly impenetrable facade: horizontal wooden planks and bricks of the building press up against the picture plane, while the dark interiors of the shops—barely visible through the open door and window slits—remain inaccessible.

Physical Description:

Photograph of the conjoined facades of a barber shop and a laundry, named the "Star Pressing Club."
