Still Life with Game and a Hunting Dog

Although an accomplished etcher himself, J-B Huet often submitted designes that were engraved and etched into prints by other artists. This drawing is similar to vignettes of scenes of the hunt drawn by Huet and etched (with chalk manner engraving) and printed in sepia by Gilles Demarteau the Elder. See "Colorful Impressions: The Printmaking Revolution in Eighteenth-Century France," exhibition catalogue, the National Gallery of Art, October 26 2003-February 16, 2004, catalogue numbers 24-26. The closest composition is at l.r. of cat. no. 25. The specific purpose of these prints is not known, but it is supposed that they were used as designes to be employed in other media, e.g. textiles, porcelains, embroideries, etc.
