Description

Subject Matter:

Francis Bedford was an acclaimed British landscape photographer with a background in illustration. His photographs balance the natural and man-made worlds. This idyllic theme is represented in this photograph which depicts the village Bedford photographed extensively, Stratford-on-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare. In addition to depicting the seeming harmonious relationship between human and nature, this image mades a nod toward religion, with the church appearing to be part of the landscape and, therefore, an extension of nature. The steeple is centered in the frame, surrounded by soft trees as with the glimmering water and tall grass stretch through the foreground.

Physical Description:

This photograph shows a pond which is lined with grass and trees. A church with a tall steeple is in the background, at the waters edge.
