Description

Subject Matter:

Marietta di Rigardo was a dancer from the Philippines who Slevogt also captured in a painting. From 1907-1911 she was married to Ludwig Thoma, a German author, publisher, editor. The "Schwarze Szenen" portfolio may tell a story that takes place in Latin America or the Southwest United States, inferred from the attire of the figures in the prints such as the man wearing a poncho and a tall, wide-brimmed hat. On the other hand, other figures in the series might suggest that Slevogt was portraying Black people as perhaps the guitar player here or even Marietta with her 'exotic' heritage.

Physical Description:

A woman dances in the middle of a room with musicians and observers seated behind her and two standing on a balcony.
