Temple of Apollo
Mary Peck
Description
Subject Matter:
This is a photograph of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece; the seventh of eight photographs in Mary Peck’s portfolio, The Temples of Greece which is comprised of black-and-white photographs depicting dramatic Greek landscapes, each accented by ancient ruins. The rich tonal ranges in the prints reflect the majesty of the expansive scenes. As described in the introduction of the portfolio, at Delphi “we are shown not the wild toss of the Phaedriades, the mountain’s horns, but their passage one behind the other, the nearer in light, the other in deep shadow.”-Vincent J. Scully, 1982
Physical Description:
This photograph depicts a temple situated on a steep mountainside. The man-made structure appears on the left side, which is illuminated, while the cliff on the right is cast in shadow.
