Description
Strauss met Alfred Stieglitz through the Camera Club of New York, and he joined Stieglitz’s new publication devoted to photography, Camera Work, as associate editor from 1903–1910. One of the founding Fellows of the Photo-Secession, Strauss participated in the group’s exhibitions and had works reproduced in Camera Work.

Subject Matter:
In this photograph, published in Camera Work, no. 3 (1903), John Francis Strauss frames an expansive view of the city of New York at twilight. The glow of the city silhouettes the Brooklyn Bridge as the structure reaches diagonally across the East River in the background. The bridge is dotted with artificial lights that pierce the black background of the darkened cityscape. Snow-covered rooftops in the foreground reflect ambient light and cause the overlapping city buildings to read as a cacophony of geometric shapes.
