Subject Matter:
This view of the Engineering Arch through West Hall, designed by the architect Albert Kahn, is an example of the numerous etchings Wilfred Byron Shaw created of the campus of the University of Michigan. Shaw worked for many years with the University's Alumni Association, first as a secretary and eventually as the Director. During his career at Michigan, he wrote several papers on—and histories of—the University. In addition to these writings, Shaw documented the school through his etchings of campus, such as this one, and through portraits of several important personalities in the University's history such as Presidents Tappan, Angell, and Hutchins.
Physical Description:
This is an etching of a paved path to an archway under a building. The path leads from the foreground of the print back into the distance. Trees line the path and in the background is a building with two turrets above and an archway below.
