The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (Kichizo Edition): #27 Kakegawa
Utagawa Hiroshige
Description
Subject Matter:
Travelers walk along the Tokaido road near the Kakegawa station. In the distance are rice fields, flooded with water. The torii gate on the left side of the painting, as well as the apparent vantage point of the travelers, suggests that this is near the mountain shrine on Mt. Akiba where travelers would often pray for protection against fire.
Physical Description:
Figures surrounded by large pines and a monumental gate that seems to be entrance of a shrine. There is a statue standing on the side of the gate. The red glow on the edge of the hills in the distance suggest the time as at dawn or at dusk. Writing in upper left and right corners, title in red box in upper right corner.
