The Fort -Agra- Palace of Akhar (marble)/ Taj in distance
Samuel Bourne
Description
Subject Matter:
This photograph depicts a vista overlooking the palatial Khas Mahal, the residence of the Mughal Emperor located inside the Agra Fort, in Agra, India. The façade of the structure is composed of five grand archways, above which hangs a wide overhanging roof that leads to a rooftop level encased by a stone railing. On left and right sides of the structure are short, cupola-topped watch towers. Adjacent to this residence are other buildings with similar archways and domed towers. In the foreground before the residence, upon a lower level lies a garden with trees and potted plants, along with a structure made of wood or metal that appears to be the support for a pavilion or tent. Standing on the level before the archways two figures converse, one standing while the other crouches on the ground. In the far distance the majestic form of the Taj Mahal stands out on the horizon. The crisp focus of this albumen print yields an astonishing clarity to the building’s ornamental details.
