Description

Subject Matter:

The sitter, Mrs. Herbert, has not been identified; however, this atmospheric portrait is similar to his painted full-length figure portraits of people such as Duret. It is also reminiscent of his portrait of Maud Franklin from 1876, "Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket" in its atmospheric handling of the figure.

Physical Description:

A woman stands facing the viewer in a shadowy, undefined setting. She has her hair pulled back and has her left foot slightly forward. Around her is a full length coat with a broad collar, a necktie at her throat and a long skirt.
