Description

Subject Matter:

The president of France, Marie Francois Sadi Carnot (1837-1894) was assassinated on June 24, 1894. On July 1, the day of his funeral procession in Paris, Whistler drew two lithographs (the other is "The Long Balcony," 1964/1.109) showing citizens of Paris watching the progress of the cortege from windows and balconies as the procession passed underneath.

Physical Description:

A vignette of a group of women on a balcony, all looking downward. The women have hats and parasols. There the horizontal bands that indicate architecture delineating different stories. Above the gathering on the terrace, at the center of the image is a small window that shows two other people looking outward.
