The new Moscow seen from St. Basil Cathedral
Dmitri Baltermants
Description
Subject Matter:
This photograph presents a westward view of the central spire and surrounding onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral seen from a high point--possibly from an upper-level room inside the Kremlin. The variegated dark tones of the cathedral contrast to the resplendent, white buildings in the distance. These are skyscrapers built during the tenure of Josef Stalin (1922-1952), including a section of the Kotelnicheskaya building on the left, finished in 1952. That the title refers to the "new Moscow" suggests the relatively recent construction of these buildings in Moscow's downtown. The photograph thus contrasts not only dark and light tones, but also old and new edifices that make up the Soviet capital's urban history.
Physical Description:
Four onion domes and a tall spire just right of center foreground a view of newly constructed office and apartment buildings.
