The Rest before the Inn, from a series of six prints of herder and animal subjec
Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem
Description
A prosperous painter and etcher in Haarlem and Amsterdam, Berchen was well known for his Italianate views. He made about fifty etchings, all of bucolic subjects featuring herders and their animals. This print shows a peasant couple who have halted at a tavern seeking refreshment. The young woman holds an empty glass upside down, while an old woman visible through a half-opened door grasps a bottle with which to fill it.
