Description

Subject Matter:

Iwai Hanshirō V also held the names Iwai Kumesaburō I and Iwai Tojaku I. He was born in 1776 and active from 1786 until shortly before his death in 1847. He was best known for his roles in contemporary plays and for his young onnagata (“female role” or “female form”) roles. He was also the father of the next two actors to hold the Hanshirō name.

Physical Description:

This print shows four individuals. The woman standing on the left wears a long robe decorated at the bottom and carries a flowering tree branch over her shoulder. The woman on the right wears a green robe covered by a black outer-robe with white crests. Her head is covered in a black wrap. A woman squats beneath them with a baby on her back. She wears blue and pink robes.
