Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph of the Edinburgh monument dedicated to novelist Sir Walter Scott, the largest of its kind, offers an iconic representation of the Victorian Gothic structure. Centrally framed and filling three-quarters of the picture plane, the monument is depicted at the end of a pathway lined with benches and trees. The gradated shading of the sky, likely achieved in the darkroom, simulates a softly radiating light that emphasizes the building's grandeur and solemnity.
