The Seamstress (La Couturière)
Edouard Vuillard
Description
Vuillard's works are often termed Intimist because of their small size and the intimacy of his subject matter, which centered on his home, his mother, and her dressmaking shop. This lithograph of a seamstress exhibits a quiet, serene mood owing to its simplicity of composition, its subtle color harmonies, and its gentle contrasts of flat and lightly modeled areas. Vuillard employed washes of color for unmodulated surfaces and deft touches of the lithographic crayon for texture.
