Description

Subject Matter:

In this allegorical portrait, titled, The Seasons, four women pose. Three sit on the ground in light garments, while one woman stands in a dark dress. The standing figure leans against a tree on the left side of the frame and turns away from the camera. On the left, a seated woman wearing a crown of flowers looks at a book. The two women sitting adjacent to her lean in, seemingly listening to her read. The setting is outdoors. This pictorialist image includes subtle tonal variations and a dream-like quality.
