The Townsend—Donegal, Ireland 1965-66
Alen MacWeeney
Description
Subject Matter:
This photograph depicts a view of a coastal landscape in Northern Ireland. The North Atlantic coast runs along the right of the photograph, its waves breaking along the spits of grassy peninsulas that stretch into the water. This photograph was created from an elevated position on a hill. This hill is treeless, and is crossed by a web of ancient stone fences, that interconnect and spread outwards down the slope. Beyond this slope a handful of small, white houses dot the hills. These houses gleam brightly against the darkness of the foreground. The composition is divided down the middle by the horizon, and the sky above is filled with bulbous rainclouds. Bursting forth from behind the cloud bank, the sun’s rays rake through the stormy atmosphere down into the center of the photograph, illuminating the coastline.
