Subject Matter:
In this photograph, United States Army General Thomas W. Sweeny stands at a slight turn as he gazes blankly out of the picture plane. The empty sleeve which curls up near the general's belt sash indicates the amputation of his right arm, which had occurred during the Mexican-American War. Sweeny served as a general during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
