Subject Matter:
The women in the image are Marjorie Henri, Emma Bellows, and Elsie Speicher who were friends, and wives of artists Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Eugene Speicher respectively. They are pictured sitting in George Bellows' studio on 146 East Nineteenth Street, New York City. Bellows and Speicher were both students of Henri and the group became good friends.
This print is from the second stone made for the image. In the first stone, Marjorie's arm is outstretched to Emma whose head is more turned to her right and the women's husbands who stand in the background are more visible. UMMA also has an edition from the first stone. The title, "Emma, Elsie, and Marjorie," differs slightly, and its accession number is 2013/2.55.
