Subject Matter:
This photograph depicts a view of the Torre dell’Orologio in Venice, a Renaissance structure that sits in Piazza San Marco. The camera’s perspective faces the building from the left. The clock face itself is located in the center of the building and is composed of three concentric circles. Seated on a terrace above the clock is a statue of a Madonna and Child. Standing on the ledge above is a statue of a winged lion, the symbol of Venice’s patron saint, Saint Mark. Adorning the building’s roof is a large metal bell, which is flanked by two bronze statues of men. The men wield hammers and appear to be striking the bell. The façade of the building abutting the clock tower’s right is composed of tiers of colonnaded windows. The shorter building abutting its left advertises itself as a hotel, and has several storefront awnings open in front of it. In the piazza before the buildings is a iron lamppost and a tall iron pole which extends off the upper portion of the frame.
