Torso of a Conch Bearer
Indian

Description
The conch was used as a ritual implement in religious ceremonies throughout India, and this figure was probably intended as an attendant to a Hindu deity. The unknown sculptor has taken advantage fully of the characteristics of his material, a finely grained black stone that holds a crisp edge and allows for the carving of fine detail.
Exhibited in "Divine Encounters, Earthly Pleasures: Twenty Centuries of Indian Art," 12/12/03-2/22/04.
