Description

Subject Matter:

This group of paintings is based on the color palettes of nine works by little-known Japanese women artists discovered by Manika Nagare in the collections of Japanese museums. Each layer of paint was added only after the previous layer had dried, alluding to the layers of history separating Nagare and the artists that preceded her. This process imbues the earlier works with a new sense of vitality while simultaneously peeling back those layers of history.

While Nagare’s creative reinvention of earlier works speaks to the important role of artists in challenging the ways women artists have been marginalized, the strict linear arrangement of the paintings— a reference to traditional museum practices of hanging artworks—
draws attention to how museums have overlooked the contributions of women artists and artists of color.
