In the 1950s, Maki Haku started making prints featuring a variety
of subjects, including kanji (Chinese characters), ceramic vessels,
fruit, and plants. This work features the embossing technique he is
known for developing: a design is created in cement, attached to a
plywood board, and the cement image is then transferred to paper
using a press. Here the technique highlights the contrast between the
shadowy tree and the silver background, making the image look three
dimensional. Maki may have been inspired by paintings of the Rimpa
School, known for their gold and silver backgrounds and imagery
drawn from the natural world.
