Description

Subject Matter:

Although she was initially trained to create functional ceramics in Japan, Futamura began creating abstract sculptures with inspiration from plants and trees after she moved to Paris during the 1990s. Despite living in Paris, Futamura often emphasizes her spiritual and cultural connections with Japan in her work. Reflecting on the Great Tōhoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011, she said, “My work represents a fear for the uncertain, a force beyond our control which threatens to extinguish everything, even the desire for rebirth. The Tōhoku earthquake reminded me of how grateful I am to have grown up in Japan, as I could not be where I am today without its cultural influence.”

Physical Description:

An abstract sculpture with the appearance of a carved seashell. The exterior has a white-lined, ribbed appearance over a rust-colored base.
