Subject Matter:
This poster was one of Paul Rand’s last designs of his career. Rand claimed the reason for his fruitful association as a designer for University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was because, “I do the job, and they accept it.” Like many of Rand’s other designs for UCLA, the focus of the poster is less on figurative imagery but rather on the aesthetic qualities of the text. The repetition of colored bubbles serves to call attention to the text and encourage readers to keep reading. The symbolic meaning of the circle suggests wholeness and harmony and the inclusion of Earth as a space marker affords the design greater symbolic significance.
