UCLA Winter Quarter
Paul Rand
Description
Subject Matter:
UCLA Extension director InJu Sturgeon approached Paul Rand and asked him to design the cover for the Winter Quarter catalog. The image Rand crafted, an orange covered in snow, alludes to one of the top exports in California as well as the season: oranges and winter. The collage-like rendering of the image hearkens back to Rand’s earlier work in publishing. Rand’s covers for magazines and books relied on visual humor inspired by Modernist techniques. Rand had a smaller budget when he worked in publishing, so collage was an attractive and cost effective solution. Rand designed this cover pro bono, so he was under similar constraints.
