Description

Subject Matter:

In this tightly framed image depicting the outside of a tinsmith's shop, a number of metal objects such as pans, pails, and a wheelbarrow hang from the exterior wall or are placed on the sidewalk in front of the shop, presumably to advertise the occupant's business. The broken windows of the shop, in addition to the well-worn exterior wall of the passageway, suggests that the Rue de la Reynie has seen better days, but Atget chose to focus attention on the sculptural forms of everyday objects produced by a Parisian tinsmith.
