Subject Matter:
This photograph is from Rita Bernstein's Domestic Landscape series, one of her earliest bodies of work. Bedrooms and interior rooms form the backdrop for the series and also recur in her later work. She focused on subjects close to her, including her children and family friends. In this image, a young girl sits on a bed, the wooden headboard visible behind her. She crosses her legs and holds a hand on each knee, while looking down into her lap.
