Description

Seligmann always professed a keen interest in magic. Magic, as well as other associations with his childhood in Basel, figure prominently in Seligmann’s work. One of those memories is of his father’s puppet entertainments; the head in this print may well recall those puppet shows from his youth as well as large masks in Carnival processions. This small lithograph also exists in an etched version. Neither version was printed as an edition; instead, they were used as holiday cards, this print usually carrying the inscription "Seasons greetings - A & K Seligmann - 1942/43."
Florence Stol was a collector of contemporary art in New York who became friends with Seligmann; another work by Seligmann in the present exhibition, Sea Fantasy, contains a note to Mrs. Stol.
