Untitled
Mark Tobey
Description
Subject Matter:
Tobey's work often investigated spirituality—he joined the Baha’i World Faith in 1918 and lived in a Japanese Zen monastery for a month in 1934—as well as Chinese calligraphy, Persian and Arabic script, and physical/environmental surroundings. This cubist and surrealist-like work is somewhat uncharacteristic of his more abstract expressionist production.
Physical Description:
At the center of this lithograph is a multi-colored oval shaped face with one eye, atop an off-white triange. The face and triangle are surrounded by earth-tone shapes, including a stair-like form that extends down from the triangle's base. The print is signed and dated (l.r.) "Tobey 1970" and editioned (l.l.) "Proof" in pencil.
