Subject Matter:
This photograph positions the viewer at some distance from the edge of a densely populated town (with architecture similar to that of Nablus, though the image lacks an identifying label or inscription). The town appears like a diagonal band of white stone buildings, sandwiched between a blank, pale sky in the top register and similarly pale grass in the bottom. The relatively polished condition of a number of the buildings in the town indicates their likely recent construction. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

In the distance, a dense cluster of white stone buildings climb gradually up a rising hill. The foreground comprises mainly of a grassy field dotted by small rocks.
