Tyree Guyton

Subject Matter:
Most well known for his large-scale installation, "The Heidelberg Project," the Detroit-based artist Tyree Guyton frequently uses found objects, especially toys. Guyton often juxtaposes childhood objects with more mature social/political themes in his work. He has used cages in other works, including his "Caged Brain" (1990, Detroit Institute of Art) and a similar sculpture, Untitled (bird cage, re-lynching) (UMMA 2013/2.312). Guyton often uses bright, contrasting colors.
Physical Description:
This sculpture consists of a red bird cage stand with a half-circle red cage on top. Inside the cage, there is a plastic green, yellow and red airplane toy hanging from the top. There is a white and black figure inside the plane. The work is signed by the artist in black paint at the base: "Tyree Guyton".
