Untitled
Victor Vasarely
Description
Subject Matter:
Part of the series Morphemes Suite, this work is an example of Vasarely's search for the purest aesthetic elements in terms of shape and color. The term "morphemes" reiterates this theme of reducing the language, here a visual one, to the most essential without losing meaning. This work comes from the artist's "Black and White" period of the 1960's, during which time he began to develop the style which would become known as Op Art.
Physical Description:
This print has a large horizontally-oriented diamond in relief with a large vertically-oriented black printed within it. Below there are a series of horizontal lines that are broken and swell, creating another diamond shape. The print is numbered (l.l.) "38/75" and signed (l.r.) "Vasarely-" in pencil.
