Description

Saito is one of the modern Japanese artists who used traditional techniques and media to create contemporary images. In this print, irregular black and white shapes are used to represent the stylized buildings and trees of the landscape. He was in Ann Arbor during the 1950s as an artist-in-residence

Saito Kiyoshi was a 20th-century Sosaku-hanga artist, a movement that emphasized self-expression and the individual creation of prints. He issued his first prints in the now-famous "Winter in Aizu" series. This series was based on his hometown in Fukushima prefecture.

Physical Description:

This woodblock print depicts houses and trees with a person walking between them. In the distance there is a mountain. On the lower left region is a red seal with his signature underneath.
