Variant MM
Josef Albers

Description
Subject Matter:
This work is reminiscent of the artist's many Variant paintings, which he first began working on in the late 1940s. In these, Albers used equal quantities of pure, unmixed colors, which he applied in carefully thought out geometric arrangements. This is an example of his highly calculated technique of applying paint to the support.
Physical Description:
This work shows a geometric, abstract composition comprised of overlapping rectangles in various shades of orange and brown, with a large, bright orange rectangle in the center and a brown border.
