Description

Subject Matter:

During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, blue and white porcelain was not only known within the borders of China, it was also welcomed in the international trade market from Asia to Europe. This vase depicts a group celebrating the birthday of an old gentleman. Next to the image, four columns of the Chinese caracter "shou" were inscribed, meaning longevity. This vase most probably served as a birthday gift to an elderly friend.

Physical Description:

Blue and White Rouleaux vase with a painting of figures and calligraphy in seal script. There is a double circle mark on the base.
