Subject Matter:
This 19th century vase depicts a scene from popular drama or opera. The pictorial portrayals based on stories from drama and fictions on ceramic wares dated back to the 13th century. Such items were highly desirable on art market and enjoyed by a middle-class audience.
Physical Description:
Blue and white beaker vase (gu) that has a flared rim that thins into a long body with a butterfly shaped buldge in the middle of the body, and then splays again at the foot a little less wide than the rim. The vase has a patterned leaf design but on the buldge is a picture of a man with a bow and arrow on a horse, another man on his feet with a shield that has a face on it in his hands, facing the man on the horse, and another man running behind the man on the horse. In the backgorund is a house and two men on a mountain.
