Vue de Jaffa, prise de la plage—View of Jaffa, from the sea shore
Felix Bonfils
Description
Subject Matter:
Two men with donkeys stand on a beach facing the camera, behind which rises the city of Jaffa. Emanating from the right-hand side of the photograph, softly rolling waves nearly come to the feet of these rigidly posed figures. Towers and rooflines in the distant city appear almost stacked on top of each other. The masts of several ship near the rightmost edge of the picture signal Jaffa’s status as an important seaport. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
Physical Description:
A city situated on top of the horizon line juts out from the left side of the photograph. In the fore- and middle ground, two men pose frontally along a beach, one standing, one astride a donkey.
