Subject Matter:
In the right background of the photograph, a large grouping of flat-roofed, white stone buildings signals the city of Bethlehem. A large walled compound, with domed buildings and towers, anchors the left-hand side of the image and balances out the composition. A number of short trees planted amid dry and rocky soil populate the left foreground. The dark leaves and cast shadows of these trees also provide a visual counterweight to the mostly light-toned buildings on the right-hand side of the picture. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
