Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, the town of Cana rests on a hill in the distance bathed in sunlight beneath a clear sky. The viewer stands on a gravel path lined with cacti, short trees, and a thick patch of shrubbery. As the label at the bottom of the photograph suggests, this settlement is thought to be the town mentioned several times in the New Testament, most famous for the occasion where Christ allegedly transmuted water into wine while attending a wedding feast. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

This photograph provides a general view of a hilltop town in the distance. Trees and shrubs on the edge of a gravel path fill much of the foreground.
