Description

Subject Matter:

The complex of the Dome of the Rock directs attention to the upper-left quadrant of this photograph which comprises a wide-angle view of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The entire picture is dominated by middle-to-light tones, with the exception of small passages of dark tones, which indicate windows, trees, or people. The lower-left portion of the photograph is taken up largely by a paved, though dusty, courtyard. A few isolated pedestrians are the only signs of human life. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

View down onto a large, open, and paved space circumscribed by intersecting rows of domed structures and trees. A large, octagonal building with a dome and surrounding courtyard dominates the upper-left quadrant of the photograph.
