Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a street scene in the Irish city of Dublin. Centrally composed, it shows a view of an alleyway street, paved with cobblestones and lined with low, two-story apartments. The street isn’t long, it terminates at a shadowed wall three doors down. On opposite sides of the alley stand an old woman and a young boy. They stare at one another, the woman slightly stooped forward, the young boy apprehensively standing contrapposto. The photograph appears to have been created at the moment of some interaction between the two, as if in the gap between sentences. The parallel lines created by the street and rooftops create an arena-like symmetry, and heightens the tension of the scene, enhancing the moment of anticipation between the two figures.
