Description

The thin line between representation and abstraction fascinates Pat Steir. In this print the artist presents a waterfall from close up. Central to Steir's concerns in this image was the balance of colors, with streaks of red glowing against more somber tones. Intermittently, the layering of a combination of colors from the spectrum over lighter areas creates a bejeweled rainbow effect. While the arrangement of colors is decorative, this effect derives from careful construction. The artist used a separate plate for each printmaking process in this complicated intaglio print.
